Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology

Research profile

Prof. Jacob de Boer

The focus of the Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology (EC&T) research group is on the sustainable use of chemicals. Since half a century discussions are ongoing on substitution of chemicals that are persistent, bioaccumulating and toxic (PBT). A large number of these have been placed on the POPs (persistent organic pollutants) list of the Stockholm Convention. Humans are exposed to many different compounds, either via the food chain or via exposure to electronics and furniture indoors. EC&T develops methods for these chemicals and their substitutes, and contributes to risk assessment studies. Among others, EC&T works for the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and carries out training programs all over the world, including interlaboratory studies and workshops.
