Extraordinairy professor

Prof. dr. Gunnar Klau heads the Life Sciences research group at Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica and is part-time professor for Bioinformatics and Operations Research at VU University Amsterdam. He focuses on design and engineering of combinatorial algorithms and mathematical models for problems in bioinformatics.

Before joining CWI in 2008, Klau worked at several universities in Germany and Austria, and at the Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories in Cambridge (MA). He was member of the DFG research center Matheon in Berlin and of Kurt Mehlhorn’s group at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics in Saarbrücken, where he obtained his PhD in the field of computer science. After a period of classical Operations Research applications he turned to bioinformatics in 2002 and contributed to several areas, ranging from structural bioinformatics to the identification of active modules in protein-interaction networks, for which he won the outstanding paper award at ISMB 2008.
