Prof. dr. Jaap Heringa obtained his Master’s degree in Mathematical Biology, Bioinformatics and Population Genetics and his PhD degree (cum laude) in Bioinformatics at Utrecht University. From 1984 till 1988, he gained industrial experience in software development at IBM’s International Network Development Centre in Uithoorn. Thereafter, he worked at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg (Germany) as a staff researcher. Next, Heringa became a group leader and senior scientist at the MRC National Institute for Medical Research in London (United Kingdom).  

Since 2002, Heringa is professor of Integrative Bioinformatics and director of the Centre for Integrative Bioinformatics at VU University Amsterdam. In 2010, he was appointed scientific director of the Netherlands Bioinformatics Centre. Heringa’s research areas are bioinformatics and systems biology. His current research interests revolve around formal modeling strategies, new sequence analysis strategies, protein interaction prediction and cancer-related data interoperability issues.
