Associate professor

Dr. Paola Gori Giorgi studied Physics at the University of Rome (Italy), where she graduated in 1996. In February 2000 she has obtained her PhD in Physics from the University of Perugia (Italy), with a thesis on the properties of the electron liquid. She then worked as a postdoctoral research associate at Tulane University (USA) in the group of professor J. Perdew, a leading scientist in the field of density functional theory (DFT). Back in Rome for a two-year position, she worked on the two-dimensional electron gas.

Thereafter, Gori Giorgi moved to the University of Paris VI with a Marie Curie intra-european fellowship, where she worked in the group of Dr. A. Savin, another leading scientist in DFT. After one year, she was appointed permanent researcher at CNRS (French Research Council) in the same institution. In 2009, she was awarded the Dutch NWO grant Vidi and the Aspasia prize for excellent female researchers. At the same time, she was appointed assistant professor at the Division of Theoretical Chemistry at VU University. In 2013, she was appointed associate professor in the same research division, and in 2016 she has been appointed University Research Chair. She has also been awarded an ERC Consolidator grant in 2015, and other grants such as ECHO (NWO) and FOM Projectruimte.
