Marjolein Glas MSc. studied Pharmacochemistry at VU University Amsterdam. During her internship, she worked on the characterization and proof of the chemical structure of a compound, using several 1D and 2D NMR techniques and HRMS. After obtaining her Bachelor’s degree in 2009, Glas obtained her Master’s degree in Drug Discovery and Safety (specialization Drug Design and Synthesis). During her internship, she designed and synthesized a series of CXCR3 modulators and analyzed the structure-activity-relationship. The results obtained in this project were part of a publication in J Med Chem in 2012.

In December 2011, Glas started her joint PhD programme at VU University, under the supervision of Prof. dr. Rob Leurs, Dr. Iwan de Esch (Medicinal Chemistry), Prof. dr. Wilbert Bitter and Dr. Joen Luirink (Molecular Microbiology). In this interdisciplinary project the protein-protein interactions of the essential bacterial protein FtsQ are characterized and inhibitors of these protein-protein interactions are designed and explored. This project combines the expertise from molecular microbiology and medicinal chemistry, but also biophysical techniques like SPR, ITC, MALLS and NMR are used.
