Medical Natural Sciences

Study programme

The Master's programme in Medical Natural Sciences is a two-year programme worth 120 ECTS, consisting of:

Compulsory subjects30 ECTS
Research project39 ECTS
Literature thesis and colloquium12 ECTS
Minor programme21-30 ECTS
Optional subjects9 -18 ECTS

You are free to put together your own programme, as long as it reflects the interdisciplinary character of Medical Natural Sciences.

You can choose from four different areas:

  • Medical Physics
  • Molecular Clinical Diagnostics
  • Physics of Life
  • Medical Physiology

Each of the four specializations mentioned above consist of compulsory introductory and advanced subjects, optional subjects, research training (Major) and colloquium/literature thesis. The balance between these components depends on the profile you choose. The Master's coordinator will help you choose the proper courses for your individual programme.

The basis: Introductory Courses

The programme gets underway with four courses of which two are compulsory. After this, you will go on to select two out of seven options to prepare yourself for your specialization, along with a few optional courses.

Popular courses are those on Biophotonics, in which you can learn the background to modern microscopic and spectroscopic techniques and obtain hands-on experience by applying this knowledge in single-molecule spectroscopy, optical tweezers, time-resolved spectroscopy and biomedical imaging.

Basic courses (12 ECTS compulsory):

  • Principles of Molecular Clinical Diagnostics I (6 ECTS)
This course will introduce you to role of biomarkers in prevention, diagnostics and therapy. Alzheimer and cancer markers will be used as examples
  • Physics of Life(6 ECTS)
This course will familiarize you with the principles which govern the interaction of various types of radiation with human tissue, before going on to introduce the basic physical principles of medical imaging
  • Modelling and Simulation in Medical Sciences (6 ECTS)
The modelling course will introduce you with the mathematical and computational methods that are used to model complex phenomena in medical sciences
  • Pathophysiology of Heart and Circulation (6 ECTS)
This course provides you knowledge and insight in the anatomy and function of the cardiovascular system

Specialization courses (12 ECTS compulsory):

  • Mechanics of Human Tissues (6 ECTS)
  • Soft Condensed Matter and Biological Physics (6 ECTS)
  • Chemical Biomarker Diagnostics (6 ECTS)
  • Priniples of Molecular Clinical Diagnostics II (6 ECTS)
  • Biophotonics 1: Microspectroscopy (3 ECTS)
  • Biophotonics 3: Practical Training (3 ECTS)
  • Biophotonics 4: Medical Imaging (3 ECTS)

Optional courses (selection):

  • Parameter Estimation applied to Medical and Biological Sciences (6 ECTS)
  • Molecular Pathology (3 ECTS)
  • Biophotonics 2: Advanced Biophysics (3 ECTS)
  • Image Processing (6 ECTS)
  • Bio-Analytical Strategies (6 ECTS)
