Molecular Toxicology (Drug Disposition & Safety Assessment)

Molecular Toxicology (Drug Disposition & Safety Assessment)

In this specialization, you will study the causes and workings of the unwanted and sometimes toxic properties of substances. Are those substances absorbed by proteins? And how can they be metabolized with the help of enzymes? Does everybody have these enzymes? And what happens with a drug if your genes don't express that one key enzyme?

Research topic

  • Towards drugs with reduced toxicity
Our molecular toxicologists use biochemical and analytical approaches (using among many others technologies on-line to gradient high-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry detection) to elucidate the enzymes involved in bioactivation and the reactive metabolites responsible for toxicity of drugs and drug candidates. These studies will make it possible to develop safer drugs, and to identify which are at risk to develop adverse drug reactions.
