About AIMMS

In accordance with its mission, the institute will contribute to the fundamental understanding of:

  • Molecular and biochemical processes, i.e. from molecule to system;
  • Discovery and validation of new targets, design and synthesis of new chemical entities, the disposition and safety and effects of drugs and therapeutics (e.g., biologics);
  • Bioanalysis of drugs, therapeutics (e.g. biologics) and molecular diagnostics (e.g., translational biomarkers and diagnostic tools) and molecular mechanisms of diseases.

Since the 2006-2008 mergers integrating various complementary sciences, knowledge areas and technology platforms, and the resulting synergies, the institute anticipates growth in all areas: increased research funding from national research foundations, industrial collaboration and European Union projects; development of partnerships; high rate of PhD completion; publications in peer-reviewed international journals; and quality impulse towards educational excellence. The bundling of research disciplines within AIMMS may also increase the critical mass of life-science-related areas at the VU University Amsterdam Campus, leading to a more robust funding strategy.

Research institutes on the VU Campus have a strong tradition of (self) evaluation and annual performance reporting. This has led to the adoption of a set of key performance indicators to monitor scholarly output. In addition, their planning and control process requires not only looking back by means of periodical evaluations, but also looking forward, by means of strategic and operational planning. Both planning and evaluation require key performance objectives and indicators in terms of quantity and quality of output and work processes. AIMMS will wholeheartedly adopt these planning and evaluation practices.

Societal impact
Due to the new interdisciplinary focus of AIMMS scientists, a quality impulse into current educational Master tracks at both faculties can be expected. Furthermore, AIMMS will become more attractive to prospective (international) post-docs, PhD- and MSc students. The contribution of AIMMS scientists to debates in science and health issues will increase, as will their visibility within society.
